The secret of consistently good skin is a daily skin care routine consisting of cleansing, toning and moisturising. This goes for men as well as women. In times gone by many men didn't see the need and considered skin care to be the domain of women, but times are changing and there are many more products for men on the market.

Cleansing

The type of cleanser you choose will depend, to a great degree, on the type of skin you have as well as personal preference.

Soap: If you prefer to use soap, choose one that is specially formulated for use on the face, as bath soaps contain detergents and perfumes that may upset the acidic balance of facial skin. Those with oily skin should avoid using soaps, even special facial soaps, as they will probably not reduce the oiliness. Soap is not a good idea for trying to remove makeup, particularly mascara. It doesn't contain the right ingredients to cut through cosmetics and if it gets in the eye, it can cause extreme pain.

Creams, Milks and Lotions: These will cleanse the skin and remove makeup and are suitable for any skin type. They are emulsions (oil mixed with water and an emulsifier to stop the two separating) and the oil content dissolves dirt and makeup without damaging the natural oils of the skin. Creams in particular are suitable for dry skins as they can be applied and removed with tissue or cotton wool and leave a moisturising film behind them.

Wipes: Wipes are really convenient for removing makeup and grime, particularly awkward places like the neck. They are suitable for all different skin types and most brands have a special variety for sensitive skin.

Exfoliants: Some cleansers contain little beads or minute particles of fruit kernels, such as apricot. These not only cleanse but gently remove dead skin flakes. Care should be taken if these products are to be used daily as overuse may upset the skin's balance or, in the case of sensitive skin, cause redness or sore patches.

Toning

Use of a toner immediately after cleansing will ensure complete removal of any remaining traces of makeup, dirt and the cleanser itself. These contain a small proportion of alcohol, which has a pleasantly astringent effect. However, if the toner of your choice actually stings and leaves your face feeling dry and taut, it is probably too strong and should be replaced with a gentler one. Toners for oily skin usually contain the most alcohol and those for dry skin, the least.

Moisturising

All skin needs moisturising, no matter what its type. Moisturisers are designed not only to replace lost skin moisture, but to prevent the loss due to direct sunlight, pollution and other environmental causes. Many skin care experts recommend that a moisturiser containing a UV filter should be used, in order to filter out the harmful rays of the sun. Others point out that complacency is even more dangerous in that the application of a sunscreen should not lead people to believe that they will be safe indefinitely in the full glare of the sun.

There are numerous moisturisers on the market, which claim to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Some seem to be quite effective and the price range is huge but it is generally recommended that you buy the best that you can afford.

One of the major causes of the premature appearance of wrinkles is smoking, so it hardly needs to be said that giving up would be great for your skin, your pocket and your overall health. In addition, drinking water hydrates the whole body, including the skin.

As well as the daily routine, make the time, at least once a week, for a pampering session, including a mask and relaxation session, both of which will improve the appearance of the skin no end.

Age is no object when it comes to skin care. If you start a good beauty routine when young, it will take much longer for those lines, wrinkles and discolourations to appear.

What kind of wood can i use for shower walls?

i am remodeling my shower. i have cement backer board up now, but i really dont want tile, i would like to use some sort of wood like bamboo or other type. i do not want it to get ruined from the moisture and soaps. does anyone know what i can use and can i apply it directly to the cement or do i have to put on some waterproof membrane first

Wood is not a good idea....unless it's high enough that splatters won't reach it. You can go with a wood look.

Blackhead marks!! help!?

i used mary kay timewise microdermabrasion kit. It helped the clogged pores but theres black marks where the blackheads were and the pores are still large, but not too big. how do i get rid of the marks?? thanks!

keep on using the kit, it should work on your black marks too. just be patient.
if after 2 weeks you still have them, switch to another microderma kit.

Rheumatism cream?

My grandma is aching due to rheumatism and she've been given a bottle of rheumatism cream. She used it and the effects are great but now she doesn't know where to get the cream from. I'm currently searching the net on her behalf hoping to know where i can buy it from.

Medical resurfacing treatments like dermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser resurfacing can be effective, too, but are expensive and have the potential for serious complications. In contrast, home microdermabrasion eliminates the need for costly equipment and high-priced medical professionals. It uses the same, sterile aluminum oxide crystals found in medical-grade machines, embedded in applicators you safely use yourself. Home microdermabrasion actually removes a layer of dead, damaged skin cells just like a professional treatment, for about 10% of the cost - and with comparable results.

Some so-called "home microdermabrasion products" use "exfoliating creams" and "skin polishing machines." Real microdermabrasion needs friction to "abrade" the skin. Creams reduce friction, so they need to be applied with a skin polishing machine, and even then often give disappointing results. The process may feel nice and give your skin a superficial "glow," but technically, if it isn't abrading the skin it isn't microdermabrasion. It can't treat serious skin conditions, and doesn't provide lasting results. In fact, these products must be used every day just for a superficial result, while medical-quality microdermabrasion is so effective that you only should do it once every two weeks!

Most people will see improvement after the first treatment, though the best results come after a series of treatments. Acne scars and large pores will be noticeably reduced. Age spots, discoloration, and fine lines will be less visible. Deeply pitted, scarred and dark pigmented areas may require more treatment. Microdermabrasion is not a "miracle cure" and results vary, but it has helped some serious skin conditions even more than expensive procedures like laser or chemical peels.

i had something like that and what i recommend is just using regular facial washes, but then put a thick layer (almost like a mask) of a non greasy but thick lotion like, lubriderm or st. ives. right before you go to sleep. and when you wake up the next morning, put on a thin layer after you wash your face. as long as its not scented, then i guarantee that it will work.

Today more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits nature has to offer and are seeking environmentally friendly products in their homes and in their skin care regimen. Therefore, it is no surprise that skin care manufacturers are catering to this wave of eco-friendly consumers and labeling products natural and/or organic.

The words natural and organic are interpreted and implied as the same meaning, however, there are distinct differences between the two.

Natural - this implies that one, some, or all of the ingredients are unprocessed and comes from nature, such as fruits, vitamins and minerals for instance; Aloe Vera is a natural product thus a product with Aloe Vera could be labeled natural. However, that does not mean the natural ingredient was grown organically and it does not mean that the skin care product is not mixed with synthetic/chemical ingredients. The term natural is not regulated in the skin care industry so the term natural is used loosely and extensively in marketing ploys.

Organic - means that no chemicals or pesticides were used during the growth of various plants and herbs. Additionally, the processes to extract the various oils from the plant did not use any type of chemical processing.  If a product with Aloe Vera in it is labeled organic, then the Aloe would have had to been grown without any type of pesticides and there would be no chemical processing to extract the oils from the plant.  Thus the product could be labeled organic.

A good analogy would be a skin care product which lists papaya and Aloe Vera. If the papaya, and Aloe Vera were grown with any type of pesticides then the skin care product can not be labeled organic, however, it could be labeled all natural and still can contain harmful chemicals.

Additionally, just because a product is labeled natural or organic that does not mean you will not have an allergic reaction. A product made with beeswax or honey would not be recommended for people that are allergic to bees, a product with almond oil would not be recommended for people with nut allergies. A skin test is always recommended with any new skin care product whether it be a synthetic, natural or organic product.

The word botanical is used a lot in skin care products too. This implies that the product includes ingredients that are derived from plants and/or trees, such as Aloe Vera and coconut. Again, botanical products can be labeled as natural but does not mean they are also organic.

Currently there are no legal standards for the terms organic and/or natural for personal care products sold in the United States. Therefore, skin care manufacturers are allowed to make all kinds of claims that their products are pure, natural and/or organic. A case in point is Clairol Herbal Essences which gave users an "organic experience", however there isn't much about this product that is herbal or organic as it contains more than a dozen synthetic petrochemicals and has a moderate toxicity rating. The skin care product industry is a billion dollar business and the claims they make concerning their products may or may not be true. Additionally, if you are paying top dollar for cosmetics that read pure, natural or organic, read the label, research and decide for yourself. The most prominent ingredient on the label will be at the top of the ingredient list and the least ingredient at the bottom. So if your natural or organic ingredient is at the bottom of the ingredient list chances are the amount in the product is minute and has no significant value for your skin.

As a personal note, I would like to state that I do believe in the natural and organic concept in skin care products, although if I am buying natural or organic products I expect them to be just, natural with safe synthetic chemicals or truly organic. There are so many chemicals in skin care products that can be harmful to your health and these chemicals are so detrimental to our environment so I read the labels and do the research to find some "green" in the products I use.
