IS a Medical/Surgical Nurse a nurse that works in the ER or ICU? What do they work in?
A med/surg nurse is a nurse who works on the general medical/surgical floor, or either medical or surgical floor. This is where the most experience is gained, so it is wise to work this area for a few years before going to icu/ccu/er. It gives you a greater and broader knowledge base, for all disease processes and surgical interventions and complications.
There is a special floor called med/surg in the hospital, named this because Mostly surgical patients wind up there, but sometimes medical patients will go there too. Many companies require you to have at least one year of med surg experience before they will hire you.
The Dangers of Several Common Elective Surgeries
Surgical medicine is one of the most high stakes sectors of the healthcare industry because it places the doctor in such control over a patient's immediate physical wellbeing. Invasive procedures that require the cutting of tissue or bone are inherently hazardous because even a slight miscalculation or errant motion by the surgeon can result in severe and permanent damage to blood vessels, vital organs, and nerves. In emergency medicine there is no time to evaluate the potential hazards of a lifesaving operation, but when weighing the pros and cons of an elective surgery it is important to be aware of some of the most commonly encountered dangers.
Though informed consent is a required prerequisite to all procedures and waivers are typically thrust in your face in triplicate, it is still difficult sometimes to determine the real level and nature of the risks involved. Doctors are not supposed to inject their own personal opinions into the discussion, but sometimes they may be eager to get the practice or the payment that a particular surgery would grant them and experience a lapse of professionalism. This is especially a problem when surgeons angle to take advantage of a growing market for cosmetic procedures.
The Possible Problems of Three Common Surgeries
It is hard to tell what precipitated the current state of elective cosmetic surgery. There have been advances made in both surgical techniques and medical technology. As a consequence of these developments, the process from surgery to complete recovery has become quicker, less painful, and in many cases scarring is less noticeable than it would have been just a few years earlier. Additionally, relaxed advertising standards have enabled much more direct to consumer marketing of specific surgical procedures, and the increased volume of patients has pushed the price of these surgeries downward.
The advertisements fail to mention, however, that not every elective surgery ends well for the patient. The following are some examples of possible problems that may arise in conjunction with common surgeries:
- Laser-corrective eye surgery - complications associated with the creation of the flap through which the reshaping of the eye takes place may lead to irregular astigmatism, Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis, or keratectasia
- Facelift surgery - may result in the paralysis of facial muscles
- Body lift/tummy tuck surgery - damage to the nerves may result in the loss of sensation throughout the midsection; mistakes can cause vascular injury; adverse reactions to anesthesia can be fatal
