Tan for safety reasons?

OK, I know it sounds weird, but...I'm very fair complected and I get a sunburn everytime I'm outside for more than 20 mins. A lot of times, I get kinda sick when I'm sunburned, too. When I wear sunscreen, I usually wear SPF 70 or something like that, but I wonder if a a base tan would keep me from burning quite so often? I guess I'm trying to decide if it's safer to "tan" and burn less often, or "burn" everytime and just suck it up. I know, I know...I should wear sunscreen (I even worked for the American Cancer Society at one point in time, so I know...), BUT, if I can't ALWAYS wear sunscreen, and I can't always put it on my own back, and I'm tired of burning all the time; so, what's the best thing for me to do? If I wanted to tan for cosmetic reasons, I would just use that self-tanning lotion, but that's not the case. Any advice is really appreciated.

DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone. It is a simple carbohydrate derived from natural plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. It interacts with dead skin cells and causes the skin to turn brown. Our bodies naturally shed dead skin cells every day, so the DHA on skin usually lasts about 5-7 days.

DHA was found to be a skin coloring agent by German scientists in the 1920's. During xray procedures, it was sometimes spilled on the skin, and at that time was found to turn the skin brown! No further research was done in this area until the 1950's. At this time, DHA was being used orally to assist children with a glycogen storage disease. Of course, the children would sometimes spill or spit the DHA onto their skin, and then their skin would turn brown after a few hours. Coppertone was the first company to introduce sunless tanning lotion in the 1960's. However, the early formulation produced unattractive results, and was not on the market for long.

DHA has been listed with the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) since 1973, and has been used cosmetically for several years, specifically sunless tanning. DHA is the main active ingredient in all sunless tanning products, and it comes in several concentrations. The most common concentrations for professional use are 8%, 10%, and 12%, 8% being lighter, 12% being darker.

Lighter concentrations tend to appear more natural, but may need several coats to acquire the desired shade. The higher percentage DHA products produce a darker tan with one coat, but can look "orange" or appear streaky and uneven, especially if attempted at home instead of being applied by a professional. In the case of DHA, higher percentage is not always better. If you are a naturally very light person, it is much better to go with the lower percentage and gradually increase the DHA to provide the most natural-looking color.

DHA takes approximately 2-4 hours to begin showing up on the skin, and will often continue to darken for up to 48 hours, depending on the formula used. It will fade naturally over 5-14 days as the skin exfoliates itself. If you sweat a lot, swim, take long hot showers, etc..., it will fade faster, since the skin will be exfoliating faster.

DHA itself does not damage the skin, and is approved for sunless tanning by the FDA. It has also been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Cancer Society, and American Medical Association. If any adverse effects are noted on the skin after applying a sunless tanning product, it is primarily from the other ingredients mixed with DHA, as DHA is considered safe for external topical use by the above organizations.

Remember, however, DHA does not protect you from the sun, so you must always still use sunscreen to prevent skin damage from sun exposure.
